What is cold plasma skin care?
Short answer
Cold plasma skin care uses energized air instead of heat. Energy is added to a gas to create plasma that can operate near skin temperature. PLUNA brings it into a five-minute daily routine at home: apply Booster Gel Serum, then glide the device slowly over the skin. No heat, no downtime.
Plasma is the fourth state of matter
Plasma is a gas given enough energy that some of it becomes electrically charged. For decades, industrial plasma was made in a vacuum at temperatures of thousands of degrees, which cannot be used on living tissue.
Around 2000, researchers developed plasma that forms at normal air pressure at about 40°C (104°F). It became known as low-temperature atmospheric-pressure plasma, or cold plasma. Plasma at body-safe temperatures, around 40°C or below, is the kind used on skin.
How PLUNA makes cold plasma
- Room air, no gas cylinder. PLUNA energizes the air around it. There is no consumable gas to buy or refill.
- Near skin temperature. PLUNA’s maker, FEAGLE, measures the plasma at about 27°C (about 81°F) where it meets the skin.
- U-Turn Technology. A patented pathway recirculates and controls the plasma inside the head for a dense, steady output across the treatment surface. The discharge that creates the plasma never touches the skin directly.
- NoZone Cold Plasma. Making plasma can also make ozone and nitrogen oxides, and simply turning the plasma down weakens it. FEAGLE’s NoZone technology is designed to keep those gases controlled while the plasma stays dense and steady.
What a treatment looks like
- Cleanse. Start with clean, dry skin.
- Apply an even layer of Booster Gel Serum. Never treat dry skin.
- Select a tip: General, Narrow, or Hair & Body.
- Choose a mode: Face (5 minutes), Line (3 minutes) or Spot (1 minute).
- Glide slowly, tip flat against the skin. No pressure is needed.
- Finish with your usual serum or cream.
A faint metallic scent during treatment is normal. The full routine, with pictures, is on How to Use.
What has been measured
In a study by True Skin Clinical Trial Center (21 June 2024), 20 adults aged 35 to 60 were measured before and straight after one PLUNA session. Their redness index was 4.93% lower, cheek elasticity 4.08% higher, eye wrinkle roughness 13.17% lower, nasolabial fold roughness 13.45% lower, and inner skin moisture at 2.5 mm below the surface 11.76% higher. It was a single session with no control group, and individual results vary and depend on consistency of use.
The charts, with what each one measured and how to read it, are on Why PLUNA Cold Plasma.
Where PLUNA comes from
PLUNA grew from 21 years of Korean cold plasma research led by Professor Kim Gyoo-cheon, a professor of human histology and anatomy and a founding member of the International Society for Plasma Medicine. His company, FEAGLE, engineers PLUNA in Yangsan, South Korea.
Behind it: 60 published papers (14 skin-related), 22 granted Korean patents, ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 quality certifications, and the 2025 Cosmoprof Asia Award for Home and Professional Devices and Tools. PLUNA is sold in the United States and Canada by Emergent MedTech.
Is cold plasma the same as fusion?
No. Cold plasma is energized air at near skin temperature. It has nothing to do with nuclear fusion.
